Oakland North: Men Creating Peace works to reduce domestic violence in Alameda County

Men Creating Peace (MCP) is a domestic violence prevention organization in Alameda County, California, that focuses on assisting men involved in violent acts to develop healthier relationships. Founded in March of 2007 by Devon Gaster, MCP offers a 52-week program divided into three stages, addressing topics such as gender roles, anger management, and domestic violence prevention. Participants, typically referred by courts, agencies, or therapists, are encouraged to take accountability for their actions and confront the “Male Role Belief System,” which promotes male superiority over women and other men. Gaster emphasizes that accountability is often the most significant challenge for participants, as it requires accepting responsibility without blaming others. The program’s success has led some graduates to return as instructors, and MCP aims to expand its services to include classes for couples and women.
