Laney Tower: Program holds abusers accountable

Men Creating Peace (MCP) is an Oakland-based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping men develop healthier relationships by addressing and overcoming abusive behaviors. Founded on restorative justice principles, MCP has been conducting weekly meetings at Laney College since 2007. These sessions provide participants, many of whom are court-mandated, with tools to recognize and change patterns of physical, mental, and emotional abuse. A key component of the program involves confronting the “Male Role Belief System”, which can perpetuate dynamics of superiority and subservience in relationships. MCP emphasizes accountability, with veteran members assisting newcomers in acknowledging their actions and overcoming denial. Additionally, individuals dealing with substance dependencies are required to engage in 12-Step programs. In celebration of its decade-long commitment to fostering change, MCP hosted its 10-Year Anniversary event, “Jazzed Up For Peace,” on October 28, 2017, at Oakland’s Preservation Park, featuring live jazz, Southern cuisine, and guest speakers. This event highlighted the organization’s belief in the potential for abusive men to transform their behaviors.
